Aesthetic & Comprehensive Dentistry

Walking into a dental office for your dental exam and cleaning shouldn’t feel mysterious or intimidating. Yet many patients, even those who’ve been going to the dentist for years, aren’t quite sure what happens during their appointment or why each step matters. At Aesthetic & Comprehensive Dentistry in Linwood, NJ, Dr. Khurrum Sheikh and his team believe that understanding your dental checkup helps you feel more comfortable and engaged in your oral health.

What Happens During Your Dental Exam

When you arrive for your dental checkup, the first thing we’ll do is review your medical history and ask about any changes to your health or medications. This isn’t just paperwork! Certain health conditions and medications can directly affect your oral health, so keeping us informed helps us provide better care.

Your dentist will then perform a comprehensive examination of your mouth, which includes:

  • Checking each tooth for signs of decay, cracks, or wear
  • Examining your gums for inflammation, recession, or periodontal disease
  • Screening for oral cancer by inspecting your tongue, throat, and soft tissues
  • Evaluating your bite and jaw alignment
  • Reviewing any existing dental work like fillings or crowns

Dr. Sheikh will also typically take digital X-rays during your visit, though not necessarily at every appointment. These images reveal what’s happening beneath the surface (between teeth, below the gum line, and within the jawbone), catching problems before they become painful or expensive.

The Cleaning Process

Your routine dental cleaning is performed by a skilled dental hygienist and involves several important steps. First, they’ll use specialized instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar buildup from around your gum line and between your teeth. This process, called scaling, eliminates the hardened deposits that your toothbrush simply can’t reach at home.

Don’t worry if you hear some scraping sounds, as that’s completely normal! The amount of buildup determines how long this step takes. Patients who maintain excellent home care and visit regularly typically have minimal tartar, making their cleanings quicker and more comfortable.

After scaling, your hygienist will polish your teeth using a gritty toothpaste and a special rotating brush. This removes surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling incredibly smooth. Finally, they’ll floss between each tooth to ensure no debris remains.

What To Expect During Your Visit

Many patients wonder what to expect at dentist appointments, especially if they haven’t been in a while. Here’s the good news: modern dentistry prioritizes your comfort. At Aesthetic & Comprehensive Dentistry, we use gentle techniques and can offer numbing options if you have sensitive teeth or gums.

Your appointment typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Most of this time is spent on your cleaning, with the examination taking about 10–15 minutes. If Dr. Sheikh identifies any concerns, he’ll discuss them with you right away, explaining your options in language that makes sense.

After Your Appointment

Before you leave, we’ll schedule your next dental exam and cleaning, typically in six months for most patients. Those with gum disease or other concerns may need more frequent visits. You’ll also receive personalized recommendations for improving your home care routine.

Your teeth may feel a bit sensitive for a day or two after a thorough cleaning, especially if you had significant buildup removed. This is temporary and normal.

How Often Should You Visit?

The standard recommendation is a routine dental cleaning and exam every six months. This frequency allows us to monitor your oral health closely and address small issues before they escalate. Some patients need more frequent visits, while others with excellent oral health might maintain longer intervals. Dr. Sheikh will recommend what’s best for your specific situation.
